Lovecrafts "The Colour Out of Space" as a Manifestation of his Concept of the Unknown and the Unknowable.

This thesis discusses H.P. Lovecraft's "The Colour Out of Space" as a manifestation of his concept of the unknown and the unknowable. It is concerned with the deliberate textual implications pointing to this concept. As the thesis describes many allusive passages, it becomes clear that Lovecraft intended the story to reflect his view on the aforementioned idea, one which has been of great interest to him throughout his life. The thesis is meant to show the highly artistic and conceptual nature of the story, with the its philosophical engagement as a creative driving force. In order to do that, the thesis makes a comparison between the main entity described in the text and two philosophical concepts, namely that of Kant's noumenon and Schopenhauer's "Will". The thesis ends with the conclusion that the text, with its pervading atmosphere, allusive nature, undecidability and contradictions, proves to be a complex literary manifestation which can be considered as central in Lovecraft's opus.

Niniejsza praca opisuje "Kolor z Przestworzy" Lovecrafta jako odzwierciedlenie jego koncepcji nieznanego i niepoznawalnego. Skupia się ona na elementach tekstu nawiązujących do owej koncepcji. Praca, poprzez analizę wielu ustępów o aluzyjnym charakterze, ukazuje, że poprzez "Kolor z Przestworzy" Lovecraft miał na celu odzwierciedlenie swojej perspektywy na to, co nieznane i niepoznawalne. Celem pracy jest ukazanie dogłębnie artystycznego i konceptualnego charakteru opowiadania, z jego filozoficznym przesłaniem jako bodźcem twórczym. W tym celu, kluczowy dla opowiadania "kolor" zostaje porównany z dwoma filozoficznymi pojęciami, pierwszym z nich jest noumen Kanta, drugim zaś "Wola" Schopenhauera. Praca zakończona jest wnioskiem, iż tekst, poprzez dominującą w nim atmosferę, aluzyjny charakter, nierozstrzygalność i sprzeczności, jest w istocie literackim odzwierciedleniem wyżej wspomnianej koncepcji, a także może być uznany za najważniejszy w dorobku Lovecrafta.
