Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association and its role in shaping relations between the Peoples Republic of China and the Holy See

Praca podejmuje tematykę relacji między Chińską Republiką Ludowej i Stolicy Apostolskiej ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem roli jaką pełni w nich Patriotyczne Stowarzyszenie Katolików Chińskich (PSKCh). Poprzez przedstawienie uwarunkowań historycznych, analizę tekstów i przeprowadzony wywiad autor opisuje zjawiska charakterystyczne dla religii chrześcijańskiej w Chinach, którą zgodnie z tezą Richarda Madsena władze ChRL chcą kontrolować aż do zupełnej likwidacji, oraz złożoność problemu normalizacji stosunków dyplomatycznych ww. podmiotów, w których wiodącą rolę odgrywa narzędzie w rękach władz chińskich jakim jest PSKCh. W czterech rozdziałach omówił autor historię chrześcijaństwa i katolicyzmu w Chinach, w której odnaleźć można charakterystyczne zjawiska i procesy, powtarzające się na przestrzeni wieków, następnie przedstawił motywy stojące za założeniem PSKCh i jego działalność od założenia do kwietnia 2023 r. tj. do czasu pisania tej pracy, wreszcie umiejscowił PSKCh w kontekście polityk zagranicznych ChRL i Stolicy Apostolskiej a także procesu sinizacji (właściwie: chinizacji) oraz wskazał na różnice w podejściu wobec ChRL i PSKCh w Stolicy Apostolskiej (rozróżnienie na “jastrzębie” i “gołębie” . W efekcie autor dochodzi do wniosku, iż istnieją konkretne przesłanki ku temu, by stwierdzić, iż w najbliższym czasie nie należy oczekiwać normalizacji stosunków, zaś sama religia będzie w ChRL spotykać się z coraz ostrzejszą polityką władz.

The work deals with the relationship between the People's Republic of China and the Holy See, with particular reference to the role played in it by the Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association (CCPA). Through a presentation of the historical background, an analysis of texts and an interview, the author describes the phenomena characteristic of the Christian religion in China, which, according to Richard Madsen's thesis, the PRC authorities want to control until it is completely eradicated, and the complexity of the problem of normalising diplomatic relations between the above-mentioned entities, in which the leading role is played by a tool in the hands of the Chinese authorities, namely the CCPA. In four chapters, the author discusses the history of Christianity and Catholicism in China, in which one can find characteristic phenomena and processes recurring over the centuries, then presents the motives behind the founding of the CCPA and its activities from its founding until April 2023. i.e. up to the time of writing this work, and finally places the CCPA in the context of the foreign policies of the PRC and the Holy See as well as the process of sinicisation (actually: chinafication), and points out the differences in the approach towards the PRC and the CCPA in the Holy See (the distinction between 'hawks' and 'doves' . As a result, the author concludes that there are concrete indications that a normalisation of relations is not to be expected in the near future, while religion itself will be confronted with increasingly harsh government policies in the PRC.
