Girlhood representation in the Barbie series movies made in 2001-2010

Celem niniejszej pracy jest zbadanie filmów z serii Barbie z lat 2001-2010 i ustalenie, w jaki sposób przedstawiono w nich dziewczyństwo. Mimo rozmaitych warunków ekonomiczno-społecznych oraz historycznych, w których zostaje ulokowana protagonistka, prawie zawsze pozostaje młodą dziewczyną u progu dorosłości. W związku z tym poszukuję odpowiedzi na pytanie, czy dziewczyństwo ukazane w filmach z serii Barbie z lat 2001-2010 jest różnorodne. Poddaję analizie dzieła o Barbie z tego okresu, badając je ze względu na wybrane przeze mnie kategorie, to jest seksualność, orientację seksualną, rasę, obraz ciała i status towarzyski. Poświęcam też uwagę estetyce wizualnej towarzyszącej dziewczyństwu w tych produkcjach. Dodatkowo analizuję wybrane przykłady amerykańskich tekstów kultury z lat 90. XX wieku oraz 2000., w celu opisania realiów panujących w ówczesnych mediach głównego nurtu w Stanach Zjednoczonych. Poprzez to staram się zbadać reprezentację dziewczyństwa w filmach z serii Barbie zarówno w ramach uniwersum, w którym istnieją, jak i względem dziewczyństwa przedstawianego wówczas w amerykańskiej popkulturze.

The aim of this bachelor’s thesis is to examine the Barbie series movies made in 2001-2010 and establishing the way that girlhood is presented in them. Even though the protagonist is based in various economic, social and historical conditions, she almost always is a young girl entering adulthood. I am trying to find out if the girlhood presented in the movies of Barbie series made in 2001-2010 is diverse. I analize films about Barbie from this time, examining them through categories such as sexuality, sexual orientation, race, body image and social status. I also explore visual aesthetics attached to girlhood in these productions. Additionally I analize examples of American culture texts from the 1990s and 2000s in order to describe reality in American mainstream media at the time. Through that I try to examine girlhood representation in the Barbie series movies made in 2001-2010 within the universe they exist in while also against the girlhood depicted in popculture of the time.
