Growing Up in the American South: The Adolescent Hero in the Selected Works of Jesmyn Ward

The paper aims to examine the depiction of adolescent heroes in the selected works of Jesmyn Ward. In particular, it analyses two of the most significant novels of the author: Salvage the Bones and Sing, Unburied, Sing. The main questions addressed in the paper are the author’s approach to adolescence and the significance of the social environment on the teenager’s development. Chapter one introduces the theoretical concepts connected with childhood and adolescence studies in literary theory. It demonstrates the connection between childhood and adolescence and discusses the relationship between childhood and adulthood. It defines the concept of adolescence and gives examples of the depiction of adolescent characters in American literature. Likewise, it describes the vision of a contemporary adolescent and the characteristic features that differentiate him or her from other literary characters. It highlights the Southern aspect of Ward’s works, showing the Mississippian context in the issues of systemic racism, poverty, addiction, and environmental crisis. Chapter two examines the depiction of the main heroine of Salvage the Bones, Esch, as a Southern girl who gets pregnant at a young age. The main focus of this part is to have a look at the representation of femininity in the novel. The question that seems to be the most significant for Ward is how a young girl learns how to become a mother. Thus, the chapter attempts to analyse the journey of the main protagonist to become a woman and a future mother in the South. Chapter three investigates the portrayal of the main protagonist of Sing, Unburied, Sing, Jojo, as a Southern boy. Focusing primarily on the coming-of-age story of the main hero, it shows the factors that influence his adolescent experience. It includes his relationship with his family and the experience of racial discrimination, which is extended further through the supernatural element of the novel. Thus, one can argue that the representation of adolescence is Ward’s poetic voice on the issues of her community.

Celem niniejszej pracy jest zbadanie jak przedstawione zostały postacie młodociane na podstawie dwóch najbardziej znaczących powieści autorstwa Jesmyn Ward, takich jak „Zbieranie kości” oraz „Śpiewajcie, z prochów, śpiewajcie”. W pracy autorka stara się odpowiedzieć na pytania, w jaki sposób Jesmyn Ward przedstawia wiek młodzieńczy oraz w jakim stopniu otoczenie społeczne ma wpływ na rozwój nastolatka. Rozdział pierwszy wprowadza teoretyczne założenia związane z pojęciem dzieciństwa oraz wieku młodzieńczego jako terminów teoretycznoliterackich. Ukazuje on zależność między dzieciństwem a wiekiem młodzieńczym oraz przedstawia związek pomiędzy przejściem od dzieciństwa do dorosłości. Nakreśla również definicję wieku młodzieńczego oraz podaje przykłady przedstawienia postaci młodocianych w dziełach literatury amerykańskiej. Ponadto omawia współczesne postrzeganie nastolatka oraz cechy charakterystyczne odróżniające go od innych bohaterów. Rozdział ten zwraca także uwagę na południowy aspekt twórczości Ward w kwestiach systemowego rasizmu, ubóstwa, uzależnień i kryzysu ekologicznego. Rozdział drugi omawia przedstawienie głównej bohaterki „Zbieranie kości” jako dziewczyny z Południa, która zachodzi w ciążę w bardzo młodym wieku. Przewodnim tematem jest tutaj przedstawienie kobiecości w powieści. Rozdział ten jest próbą ukazania drogi bohaterki do stania się dorosłą kobietą i przyszłą matką. Rozdział trzeci bada przedstawienie głównego bohatera „Śpiewajcie, z prochów, śpiewajcie” jako chłopca z Południa. Skupiając się przede wszystkim na dojrzewania bohatera, przedstawia on czynniki, które znacząco wpłynęły na ten proces. Obejmują one relacje bohatera z rodziną oraz dyskryminację rasową, które są uwidocznione poprzez element nadprzyrodzony. Dzieła Ward traktujące o wieku młodzieńczym są więc odzwierciedleniem jej zmagania się z marginalizacją problemów Południa.
