Representation or marginalization: an analysis of the representativity of Racial Minority Artists in the Album of the Year category at the Grammy Awards

W niniejszej pracy podjęto analizę reprezentatywności artystów mniejszości rasowych w kategorii Album Roku nagród Grammy przyznawanych przez National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences. To najważniejsze amerykańskie wyróżnienie muzyczne w ostatnich latach stało się obiektem krytyki medialnej z powodu oskarżeń o faworyzowanie białych twórców i artystów. Celem pracy była więc próba znalezienia odpowiedzi na pytanie, czy w najważniejszej z kategorii nagród Grammy przyznawanej za najlepszą płytę rzeczywiście dochodzi do marginalizacji przedstawicieli mniejszości rasowych. Pierwszy rozdział pracy przedstawia historię powstania nagrody, proces nominowania artystów i wyboru laureatów, kryteria przyznawania statuetek w głównych kategoriach, a także omawia znaczenie marki Grammy dla współczesnego przemysłu muzycznego. Rozdział drugi podejmuje się nakreślenia głównych zarzutów stawianych Akademii dotyczących przede wszystkim uprzedzeń na tle rasowym. W dalszej części przeprowadzona została analiza nominowanych i nagrodzonych artystów w kategorii Album Roku od początku istnienia nagrody, z podziałem na większość i mniejszość rasową. Wyniki badania zestawiono kolejno z danymi liczbowymi dotyczącymi struktury demograficznej USA oraz recenzjami krytyków muzycznych w tym samym przedziale czasowym.

This paper analyzes the representativeness of Racial Minority artists in the Album of the Year category of the Grammy Awards granted by the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences. This most important American music award in recent years has become the object of media criticism due to accusations of favoring white creators and artists. The aim of the study was therefore to find an answer to the question of whether Racial Minorities are in fact marginalized in this most important category at the Grammy Awards. The first chapter presents a brief history of the creation of the award, the process of nominating artists and selecting winners and the criteria for awarding musicians in the general field categories. Moreover, it discusses the importance of the Grammy brand for the contemporary music industry. The second chapter attempts to outline the main allegations against the Academy concerning, above all, racial prejudice. In the next part, an analysis of the nominated and awarded artists in the Album of the Year category has been carried out in regard to racial majority and minority. The results of the study were compared sequentially with US demographic figures and reviews from music critics over the same time period.
