An analysis of the differences in the Polish and English translations of The heart of a dog” by Mikhail Bulgakov (based on selected fragments).

Niniejsza praca dyplomowa poświęcona jest analizie różnic między tłumaczeniami (angielskim autorstwa Michaela Glenny i polskim autorstwa Krzysztofa Tura) a oryginałem powieści „Psie serce” Michaiła Bułhakowa. W części teoretycznej przedstawiono definicje tłumaczenia oraz przybliżono specyfikę tłumaczenia literackiego. Omówione zostały również strategie, techniki, błędy tłumaczeniowe oraz zagadnienie nieprzetłumaczalności, które często podlegają badaniom przekładoznawców. Zawarte również zostało uzasadnienie motywacji wyboru tłumaczeń do analizy porównawczej i przedstawiono specyfikę struktur językowych języka angielskiego, polskiego i rosyjskiego. W części analitycznej pracy przeprowadzona została analiza porównawcza wybranych fragmentów powieści, które zostały zaczerpnięte z jej pierwszego rozdziału. Analiza porównawcza polega na zestawieniu fragmentów oryginału i dwóch tłumaczeń, wskazaniu występujących między nimi różnic, a następnie na omówieniu ich oraz próbie zidentyfikowania ich przyczyn. Typy różnic zostały podzielone na siedem grup: opuszczenia, dodatki, różnice wynikające z wieloznaczności słów, rozbieżności wynikające z różnic w interpretacji, rozbieżności wynikające z różnic kulturowych, różnice w sile i nacechowaniu słowa oraz różnice w jednostkach miary, walutach i liczbach.

In this thesis the differences between the translations (English translation by Michael Glenny and Polish translation by Krzysztof Tur) and the original of Mikhail Bulgakov's novel “The heart of a dog” are examined. In the theoretical part, the definitions of translation are presented, and the specifics of literary translation are introduced. Strategies, techniques, translation errors and the issue of untranslatability, which are often the subject of translation studies, are also discussed. The justification for the choice of translations for the comparative analysis is also included and the specificity of English, Polish and Russian language structures is presented. In the analytical part of the thesis, a comparative analysis of selected fragments, which are taken from the first chapter of the novel, is carried out. The comparative analysis consists in comparing the fragments of the original and the two translations, pointing out the differences between them, and then discussing them and trying to identify their causes. The types of differences are divided into seven groups: omissions, additions, differences due to word ambiguity, discrepancies due to differences in interpretation, discrepancies due to cultural differences, differences in word strength and its emotional impact, and differences in units of measurement, currencies and numbers.
