From Olympiade to Alceste: operatic aria in the 18th century

Questa tesi avvicina al lettore il percorso dell'opera nel Settecento, riferendosi alle riforme di Metastasio e di De' Calzabigi e prestando un'attenzione particolare all'evoluzione dell'aria. Il primo capitolo descrive in breve la storia del genere dalla sua nascita fino alla fine del Seicento. Il secondo segue i cambiamenti nel libretto settecentesco, concentrandosi soprattutto sui modelli proposti da Metastasio e da De' Calzabigi. Nel terzo capitolo vengono analizzate e messe a confronto arie provenienti dall'"Olimpiade" e da "Alceste", opere rappresentative dei due artisti. Nella tesi viene adoperata sia la metodologia analitica sia quella comparativa.

This thesis presents to the reader the development of the opera in 18th century, in reference to the reforms of Metastasio and De' Calzabigi, with particular attention to aria's evolution. The first chapter describes shortly the story of the genre from it's birth till the end of the 17th century. The second follows the changes in 18th century's librettos, with a focus on the models proposed by Metastasio and De' Calzabigi. In the third chapter the arias from "Olimpiade" and "Alceste", rappresentative operas of these artists are analised and compared. In the thesis there are used both analitic and comparative method.

Niniejsza praca przybliża czytelnikowi losy opery w XVIII wieku, odnosząc się do reform Metastasia i De' Calzabigiego, ze zwróceniem szczególnej uwagi na ewolucję arii. Pierwszy rozdział opisuje w skrócie historię gatunku od narodzin do końca XVII wieku. Drugi podąża za zmianami w libretcie osiemnastowiecznym, koncentrując się zwłaszcza na modelach zaproponowanych przez Metastasia i De' Calzabigiego. W trzecim rozdziale są analizowane i porównywane arie pochodzące z "Olimpiady" i "Alcesty" - oper reprezentatywnych dla tych dwóch artystów. W pracy są stosowane zarówno metoda analityczna, jak i porównawcza.
