The sea through the eyes of Andreas Karkavitsas. Translation of selected stories from the collection Words from the prow (Λόγια της πλώρης)

Niniejsza praca jest przekładem wraz z krótkim komentarzem wybranych opowiadań ze zbioru Opowieści z dziobu statku Andreasa Karkavitsasa, który był jednym z głównych przedstawicieli naturalizmu we współczesnej literaturze greckiej. Autor opisuje w tym zbiorze głównie trudy życia ludzi pracujących na morzu: marynarzy, piratów, poławiaczy gąbek, często zestawiając je z sielankowym życiem lądowym. W części poprzedzającej przekłady staram się krótko przedstawić obraz morza w świadomości Greków tak, by potencjalny czytelnik mógł zrozumieć, że morze nie zawsze kojarzy się temu ludowi ze znaną nam z wakacji, stereotypową wizją błękitnego Morza Śródziemnego. Opowiadania starałam się wybrać tak, aby przedstawić różnorodność poglądów, jakie ich bohaterowie mieli do tego nieprzewidywalnego żywiołu oraz by w pełni odzwierciedlić etnograficzną charakterystykę twórczości autora. Tym sposobem wyselekcjonowałam pięć, spośród dwudziestu, opowiadań ze zbioru: Morze, Sprawiedliwość morza, Gorgona, Wraki oraz Korsarze.

This work is a translation with a short commentary of selected stories from the collection Words from the prow by Andreas Karkavitsas, who was one of the main representatives of naturalism in modern Greek literature. In this collection, the author mainly describes the hardships of life of people working at sea: sailors, pirates, sponge divers, often juxtaposing them with idyllic land life. In the part preceding the translations, I try to briefly present the image of the sea in the minds of the Greeks, so that the potential reader can understand that the sea is not always associated by this people with the stereotypical vision of the blue Mediterranean Sea. I tried to choose the stories in such a way as to present the diversity of views and attitudes that their heroes had to this unpredictable element and to fully reflect the ethnographic characteristics of the author's work. In this way, I selected five out of twenty stories from the collection: Sea, Justice of the Sea, Gorgon, Shipwrecks and Corsairs.
