Body and corporeality in Chinese performative arts

In this thesis, the author carries out the analysis of Chinese performative arts with a special focus on the body and corporeality in the chosen forms - Chinese dance and Chinese martial arts. The analysis starts with the attempt to define performative arts and the outline of the Asian and Chinese performative tradition. Further chapters examine the chosen forms of performative arts. The work focuses on showcasing the performative aspects of selected arts. To do so, the analyse includes summary of the characteristics, the history, and the description of the corporeality present in each art. To create an image of the body, movement and form in dance and martial arts, concepts of aesthetics in Chinese culture have been used. In the thesis, it was possible to discover the uncertain borders between the dance and martial arts in China by placing emphasis on how the two forms of performative arts had been forming simultaneously throughout history.

W pracy przeprowadzono analizę chińskich sztuk performatywnych z uwzględnieniem problematyki cielesności w wybranych sztukach widowiskowych kultury Chin – tańcu chińskim oraz chińskich sztukach walki. Analizę otwiera próba definicji sztuk performatywnych oraz zarysu ich historii na kontynencie azjatyckim wraz z przedstawieniem tradycji chińskiej. Kolejne rozdziały omawiają wybrane formy sztuk performatywnych. Praca skupia się na przedstawieniu ich widowiskowości poprzez sporządzenie ogólnej charakterystyki, zarysu historycznego oraz opisu cielesności w tych sztukach. By ukazać obraz ciała, ruchu i form obecnych w tańcu oraz sztukach walki przywołane zostały wartości oraz pojęcia z estetyki kultury Chin. W pracy udało się zauważyć, jak niejasne są granice pomiędzy tańcem a sztukami walki w kulturze chińskiej, przy jednoczesnym podkreśleniu wspólnej historii ich kształtowania się.
