In the article the relations between Polish and Austrian modern theatre are being presented. The author focuses on the first adaptations and staging of Peter Handke drama plays and stresses the presence of Viennese plays by Arthur Schnitzler in the Polish repertoire. The influence that Thomas Bernhard’s prose and dramatic works had on theatre performances created by Krystian Lupa is also discussed, as well as the importance of the Austrian prose written after the Great War which influenced the shape of modern Polish theatre movement (i.e. literary works by Robert Musil, Hermann Broch, Rainer Maria Rilke).
