The portrait of an artist hidden in his correspondence. An analysis of Vincent Van Goghs letters about art, written in french to his brother Théo.

The focus of this thesis is on Vincent Van Gogh as a letter-writer and not on Van Gogh as a painter. On the other hand, it has proved difficult to separate the two roles. It has been shown that the letters are often complementary to the works, as they explain what the painting meant to Van Gogh. A selection of letters written in French has been made and an analysis of some of them has been carried out to emphasise their great importance; it is through correspondence that an attempt can be made to understand this great artist.

W niniejszej pracy magisterskiej skupiono się na Vincencie Van Goghu jako twórcy listów, a nie na Van Goghu jako malarzu. Z drugiej strony okazało się, że trudno jest oddzielić te dwie role. Wykazano, że listy są często uzupełnieniem dzieł, ponieważ wyjaśniają, co obraz oznaczał dla Van Gogha. Dokonano wyboru listów napisanych w języku francuskim i przeprowadzono analizę niektórych z nich, aby podkreślić ich ogromne znaczenie; to właśnie poprzez korespondencję można podjąć próbę zrozumienia tego wielkiego artysty.

Dans ce mémoire de master, l’accent a été mis sur Vincent Van Gogh en tant qu’artiste épistolier plutôt que sur Van Gogh en tant qu’artiste peintre. D’autre part, il s’est avéré difficile de séparer ces deux rôles de l’artiste. À plusieurs reprises, il a été démontré que les lettres sont complémentaires aux œuvres, car elles expliquent ce que le tableau signifiait pour Van Gogh. Une sélection de lettres rédigées en français a été effectuée et une analyse de certaines d’entre elles a été entreprise afin de mettre en évidence leur considérable importance ; c’est à travers la correspondance que la tentative de compréhension de ce grand artiste peut être entreprise.
