Modjeska and stage representations of motherhood in the 19th century

The text is devoted to the significance of the mother figure in the life and career of Helena Modjeska. Starting with the artist's relationships with her mother, Józefa Benda, and her own experiences of motherhood, the author traces the creations of characters of mothers in Modjeska's stage career, identifying the types of mother-lover and a rival of her own daugher in the contemporary drama, as well as tragic mother in poetic drama. The theater representations of motherhood are juxtaposed with the normative image of womanhood of the times and confronted with the self-creation Modjeska undertool in public life.
