Activity of the Library in the structure of the Institute of Musicology of the Jagiellonian University

The Library and Audio Collection of the Institute of Musicology is a part of the information and library system of the Jagiellonian University together with the Jagiellonian Library and other institute and faculty libraries. The library collection, initially just a reference collection for teaching musicology, expanded through 1) private collections and legacies, 2) systematic purchase of books, scores, and recordings, 3) acquisition of unique collections, and 4) access to external sources of electronic information. The current model of operation of the library took shape thanks to the continuous development of library staff, state-of-the-art equipment, cooperation between libraries in the field of automation, international contacts, and inclusion of librarians in the process of education. In this model, the Library is integrated into the operation of the Institute of Musicology on a number of different planes, notably educational, organisational, and scientific. The Library provides the centre of information, and research and educational facilities where the user, whether a student or a member of the faculty, has access to an array of resources, both traditional and electronic, combined into a single system of library services. By participating in the educational process, the Library meets its objective, currently defined by the notion of ‘information literacy’.
