The optimism of the ruins : some remarks on the novel "Król zamczyska" by Seweryn Goszczyński and its contexts

The primary purpose of the essay is to discuss one of the symbolic meanings of the ruins in European culture in the Romantic period. The attention is concentrated on a non-conventional meaning of ruins in Król zamczyska [The King of the Castle, 1842] by Polish writer, Seweryn Goszczyński (1801-1876), but the reading of the novel embraces larger contexts. First of all, the case of John Soane’s project of the Bank of England is analysed. Therefore, a special accent is given to its view in ruins painted in watercolor by Joseph Michael Gandy. Moreover, the reflection on the "philosophy of ruins" expressed by François-René Chateaubriand in "The Genius of Christianity" (1802) is discussed as a model of thinking about some positive aspects of architectural destruction and its connection with the situation of the humanity. In conclusion, a thorough reading of the novel by Goszczyński is conducted, showing the spectrum of optimistic senses inscribed with the symbol of ruins (historic, political and moral).
