"A faceless file" : the case of sentry Kliś

The article presents the story of Karol Kliś - one of the guards of the Security Office in Nowy Targ (the Podhale region), who was killed in the spring of 1946 by members of the local anti-communist partisans. Reconstructed on the basis of documentation from a personal file, the micro-history reveals the drama of an ordinary man absorbed by the terror of ideology, the ruthless system of a total institution such as the Ministry of Public Security and the brutal laws of the civil war. The starting point for the entire analysis is the empty place left by the photo of Kliś torn from the questionnaire of an officer of the Department of Security. In the light of the other documents submitted in his personal file, it takes on particular importance. It can be interpreted as a metaphor for the fate of a man who, by losing his life, also loses his subjectivity, is "liquidated" and forgotten by his institution, i.e. the Security Office. As the documents show, the lack of the body of the murdered guard also becomes a "formal problem". Its consequence is the refusal of the Security Service to provide financial assistance to Kliś's pregnant wife, who is trying unsuccessfully to obtain a posthumous pension. In this context, the torn-out trace left by the photograph can also be read as a metaphor for a family tragedy. Ultimately, the contents of Kliś's personal file provoke a broader, anthropological reflection on the universal ruthlessness of war rules, which firmly define the category of "enemy" and construct their code of ethics based on the principle of particular morality described by Harald Welzer. The article is the result of a query conducted at the Institute of National Remebrance as part of the research project "Józef Kuraś "Ogień" and his subordinates in the social imagination. Artykuł przedstawia losy Karola Klisia - strażnika Urzędu Bezpieczeństwa w Nowym Targu (Podhale), zabitego wiosną 1946 r. przez członków zgrupowania partyzanckiego "Błyskawica". Zrekonstruowana na podstawie dokumentacji z teczki personalnej mikrohistoria ukazuje dramat zwykłego człowieka pochłoniętego przez terror ideologii, despotyczny system totalnej instytucji nadzoru oraz brutalne prawa wojny. Punktem wyjścia do analizy staje się puste miejsce po zdjęciu wartownika, które zostało wyrwane z kwestionariusza osobowego funkcjonariusza UB. W świetle pozostałych dokumentów złożonych w jego teczce personalnej ślad ten nabiera szczególnego znaczenia. Można go interpretować jako metaforę losu człowieka, który tracąc życie, traci podmiotowość, zostaje "zlikwidowany" i zapomniany przez swoją instytucję. Brak ciała zamordowanego strażnika staje się dla UB "problemem formalnym". Jego konsekwencją jest odmowa udzielenia pomocy finansowej ciężarnej żonie Klisia, która bezskutecznie stara się o uzyskanie pośmiertnej renty. Puste miejsce po fotografii można więc odczytać również jako metaforę rodzinnej tragedii. Ostatecznie zawartość teczki personalnej Karola Klisia skłania do szerszej, antropologicznej refleksji nad uniwersalną bezwzględnością wojennych reguł, które definiują kategorię "wroga" w oparciu o bezwzględną zasadę partykularnej moralności.
