Transfomations in the translation process of the expanded attribute in German and Polish language

Niniejszy artykuł jest próbą wskazania potencjalnych pułapek translatorskich w procesie tłumaczenia konstrukcji przydawki rozwiniętej z języka niemieckiego na język polski oraz przy tłumaczeniu w odwrotnym kierunku. Różnice w systemach badanych języków wymuszają dokonanie przez translatora określonych transformacji. Są to permutacje, substytucje i uzupełnienia obligatoryjne oraz fakultatywne, wymuszone normą bądź uzusem języka docelowego. Transformacje te wynikają z różnych przyczyn, takich jak różnice w walencji ekwiwalentnych imiesłowów, konieczność uniknięcia konstrukcji homonimicznych czy brak bezpośredniego ekwiwalentu w języku docelowym.

The following article is an inquiry into the structure of the expanded adjectival and participial attributes. The development of expanded attribute forms in German has its structural basis in the principle of centripetal word order. The German influence comes into effect when certain translators imitate German participle constructions and thereby they disturb the structural pattern of Polish equivalent forms. The author presents trans-formations in the translation process of these constructions from Polish into German and from German into Polish. By comparing German texts and their Polish translations a description of the main alterations is established. Three transformations are possible: elimination, permutation and substitution. All of them can be facultative or obligatory. Transformations result from differences between the valency of Polish and German participles, from the necessity of avoiding ambiguity forms, or from missing equivalents in the second language.
