Runes in Finland : the margins of Scandinavian runic culture

Only a handful of runic inscriptions have been recovered from the territory of present-day Finland. Finland has not been considered to have a tradition of runic writing. While inscriptions from Finland are few, they are varied in their age, find location, and carving support. Additionally, there are persistent notions that there must have been more. Discussion of runes in Finland or their lack is a recurrent theme in debates over Finnish prehistory, often tied to language politics. It is possible to talk about a Finnish runic tradition in the dual sense of documented use of runes at different times and vernacular beliefs about the (pre)historical use of runes.
