Included as consumers - excluded as citizens : the teenagers in urban space

This article discusses the teenagers’ social exclusion in the urban space, defined in the context of the citizenship what refers to the possibility to make use of the urban space and the impact on it. The empirical data on the young’s’ attitudes toward the three types of the urban space (the neighbourhood, city centre and the mall) had been analyzed in the terms of citizenship and the constructivist theories of space. The research sample were the 838 gymnasium students in Krakow and Katowice - the cities comparable in terms of their scale and metropolitan functions, but different structurally and symbolically. Concluding, the specificity of the urban space correlates with the perception of the places and their valorization but it doesn’t correlates with the teenagers’ sense of agency. The city is the mechanism which generates the consumer attitudes but the city doesn’t stimulate the agency and the activity oriented to the public sphere.

W artykule podjęto temat wykluczenia społecznego nastolatków w przestrzeni miejskiej, w tym możliwości korzystania z tej przestrzeni i wpływania na nią. Dane z badań empirycznych na temat postaw młodych mieszkańców wobec trzech rodzajów przestrzeni miasta (miejsca zamieszkania, centrum miasta i galerii handlowej) zostały przeanalizowane w kontekście koncepcji obywatelskości, konsumpcjonizmu oraz konstruktywistycznych teorii przestrzeni. Próbę badawczą stanowiło 838 uczniów gimnazjów z Krakowa i Katowic - miast porównywalnych pod względem wielkości i funkcji metropolitarnych, ale odmiennych pod względem struktury urbanistycznej i symboliki przestrzeni. Analiza danych umożliwia sformułowanie wniosku, że specyfika przestrzeni miast ma związek z postrzeganiem i waloryzowaniem poszczególnych miejsc oraz sposobem ich "używania", ale nie ma ona związku z poczuciem sprawstwa u nastolatków. Miasto jest mechanizmem generującym postawy konsumpcyjne, ale nie stymuluje postaw aktywnych i zorientowanych na sprawy publiczne.
