The triology of Wladyslaw Terlecki, a representative of the "Contemporary generation", is described and interpreted. The action of these novels, "The conspiracy" (1966), "Two heads of the bird" (1970), and "Return from the Tsar's Village", which takes place during the January Uprising, is studied from the point of view of the non-hypothetical intentions realized by the author. This permits one to define the consequences of introducing the perspective of personal narration in a historical novel. These are undependability of the narrator, unability of showing neither a commentary nor information veryfying' the point of view of the character. Therefore, on the strenght of things lost through the quality of the information-didactical properties and the introduction of the convention "Commom knowledge" of the reader and author about the epoch, like in novels about currently occurring events. Terleciki tries in "The conspiracy" (the genesis of which is set on the participation of the writer in discussions on the sense of the fight for national liberation in Poland in the 19 th century with that of the late 1950's and early 1960's) to create people with complete individual right's from the past. This requires the introductiion of experiments appropriate to modern psychological novels (which brought about the above mentioned results). At the same time he wants to realize his own patriotic and national aspirations. The attempt to overthrow the false stereotyped views of Poland's history with which he met in the discussions mentioned above. He believes that it suffices to provide the reader with "correct" information against the "false" legend. That hindered the fulfilling of the first part of the program and was the cause of an artistic defeat. Only after the acceptance of a subjective theory of truth and the modern outlook on the nature of historical fact (which is never completely explained) was Terlecki able to fulfil those two seemingly non-contradictory programs contained in "Two heads of the bird' - a novel having a consistently personal perspektive of narration which, although showing the reader a disquieting hypothesis about persons of the historical process, fulfils the didactic intentions of the author. The novel is not only historical: it is about history. "Return from the Tsar's Village" is a recapitulation of the cycle.
