University as a collaborator : universities, society and culture

This chapter discusses how Polish universities have changed the understanding of their role in the creation and dissemination of culture, as well as in the preservation of cultural heritage. The political transformation of 1989, which brought back democratic regime to Poland, was a turning point in Polish higher education system, and the government has started to understand its importance in securing economic growth and social stability. During the last decade of the 20th century and early 21st century, the government has introduced the market-centered approach to Polish higher education policy, partially following recommendations of the World Bank and OECD. However, the very recent changes show that universities should appreciate their social role that goes far beyond just economic impact. Therefore, Polish universities have once again adopted culture and cultural heritage as one of their key responsibilities.
