Cursed things, desired things : materiality and memory of social mobility in post-war Poland

Artykuł ma celu analizę narracji pamiętnikarskich o awansie społecznym w PRL przez pryzmat materialności. W moim przekonaniu pozwala to lepiej zrozumieć źródła pamiętnikarskie, które powstawały w połowie lat sześćdziesiątych, w tym wykorzystywane przez autorów i autorki strategie pisarskie. Ponadto zwrócenie uwagi na rzeczy daje lepszy wgląd w wyobrażenie świata pamiętnikarzy i pamiętnikarek, począwszy od lat trzydziestych aż po tzw. dekadę Gomułki. Zadanie to wymaga postawienia pytań o: 1) status i znaczenie przedmiotów w indywidualnych narracjach o mobilności społecznej; 2) rolę rzeczy w procesach pamiętania; 3) współtworzenie przez rzeczy "socjalistycznego świata znaczeń". Głównym źródłem wykorzystanym podczas badań były pamiętniki konkursowe z zasobu Towarzystwa Pamiętnikarstwa Polskiego przechowywane w zbiorach Archiwum Akt Nowych w Warszawie.

This article aims to analyze memoir narratives of social mobility in the People’s Republic of Poland (PRL) through the lens of materiality. In my view, this approach offers a better understanding of memoir sources created in the mid-1960s, including the writing strategies employed by their authors. Additionally, focusing on material objects provides deeper insight into the worldview of memoirists from the 1930s through the so-called Gomulka decade. This task necessitates addressing questions about: 1. The status and significance of objects in individual narratives of social mobility; 2. The role of objects in the processes of remembering; 3. The role of objects in shaping the "socialist world of meanings". The primary sources utilized in this research were competition memoirs from the Polish Memoir Society’s collection, preserved in the Archives of New Records in Warsaw.
