Representations of the Sanhedrin in post-Byzantine art following the example of a 19th century icon in Uličskié Krivé
In Slovakia, two nineteenth-century icons of the Passion of Christ are found at Archangel Michael Orthodox Church in the village of Uličskié Krivé and Humenne museum in the village of Nová Sedlica. They present scenes of The Unjust Trial of Christ. Christ is tried by Pilate, Caiaphas and members of the Sanhedrin. In the hall, there are several judges holding scrolls with the texts of the death sentence. This iconographic theme is not known in Byzantine art and comes from the West. This paper will show the original details of this presentation and discuss its reception in post-Byzantine art in Central and Eastern Europe.
