Cut from the same cloth? : identifying a difference between populist parties in CEE and Western Europe
This study investigates whether there is a significant difference between populist parties in the West and the CEE by looking at an average trend in the characteristics of populist parties per region, based on Chapel Hill survey data from 2002 to 2019. The measurement includes party maturity, vote share, ideological and economic left-right placement. The cultural axis tendencies show similarities between populist parties across the regions. The economic dimension showed a significant difference: radical-supply parties in CEE were identified on the economic right, whereas in the West, they were identified on the economic left across estimations.
