On giving new names for streets in Radom district during the Second World War

In the Nazi period a number of names for streets and squares were changed. This also took place in Poland in the General Government, where many streets and squares were given new names. The purpose of this action was fi rst and foremost to emphasize their power and ideology in the nomenclature, as well as to remove from the public space the names which were not in line with Nazism or those which were strongly linked to Polish culture and national awareness of the Polish nation. The purpose of this article is to present how the names of streets and squares in Radom district were changed during the Second World War. An attempt to highlight what trends could be observed concerning the changes is here made.

Die Zielsetzung des vorliegenden Beitrags besteht darin, zu präsentieren, wie die Straßen und Plätze in Kreis Radom-Land (Generalgouvernement, Polen) zur nationalsozialistischen Besatzungszeit im Zweiten Weltkrieg umbenannt wurden. Dabei wird der Versuch unternommen, zu ermitteln, welche Tendenzen sich bei der Umbenennung beobachten lassen. Der vorliegende Beitrag stellt eine Fortsetzung von Forschungen der Verfasser dar.
