The crisis of media pluralism in Italy in 21st century

The new media law enacted by the former cabinet led by Matteo Renzi was aimed to subordinate the public broadcast er RAI to the executive power and to create the ground for future parliamentary elections. The Italian opposition, criticising the law, has recognised it as a serious threat to the media pluralism and const itutional guarantee of freedom of expression. Thus, the RAI was deprived of parliamentary control. Ex prime minister, just ifying the amendments, stated that they were aimed to improve the effi ciency of the RAI's management and funding. As a result of enacted law, furt her defining of the RAI's role in the process of political communication remains a responsibility of the present Paolo Gentiloni's government.
