Parades de Jan Potocki au château de Łańcut

The connections of Jan Potocki with theater have been discovered fairly recently. His career as a dramatic author has begun, in a way, in the 1950s’ after the discovery, inunusual circumstances, of the copy of The Collectionof Parades Presented in the Theater in Łańcut in 1792. After being translated into Polish the Parades were publishedin "Dialog" in August 1958. Acouple of months later Roger Caillos published them in a Paris periodical "People’s Theatre" ("Le the´aˆtre populaire") (1959, no. 34) in the original language.The first stage presentation in Polish of the Parades took placein November 1959 in Warsaw. In Autumn 1959 they were played, with a big success, in Paris in the Théâtre des Nations.Thanks to this success the dramatic works of Potocki became known all over the world.

Dość niedawno odkryto związki Jana Potockiego z teatrem. Jego kariera jako autora dramatycznego rozpoczyna się, w pewnym sensie, na nowo w latach pięćdziesiątych, po odkryciu, w niezwykłych okolicznościach,egzemplarza Zbioru parad przedstawionych w teatrze w Łańcucie w roku 1792. Po przetłumaczeniu na język polski Parady zostały opublikowane w czasopiśmie "Dialog" w sierpniu 1958 r. Kilka miesięcy później Roger Caillois wydał je w paryskim czasopiśmie "Teatr ludowy" ("Le théâtre populaire") (1959,nr 34) w języku oryginału. Pierwsza prezentacja sceniczna Parad po polsku odbyła się w listopadzie 1958 r. w Warszawie, a wiosną 1959 r. zostały z dużym sukcesem zagrane w Paryżu w Théâtre des Nations. Powodzenie to zapewniło dramatycznej twórczości Potockiego międzynarodową karierę.

Les rapports de Jan Potocki avec le theatre ne sont devenus évidents qu’assez récemment. Sa carrière d’auteur dramatique commence en quelque sorte à nouveau dans les années 1950, après la découverte, dans des circonstances exceptionnelles, d’un exemplaire du Recueil de Parades représentées sur le théâtre de Łańcut dans l’année 1792. Traduites en polonais, les Parades ont paru en août 1958 dans la revue Dialog. Quelques mois plus tard, Roger Caillois, lesapublié dans la revue parisienne Le Théâtre populaire (1959, n° 34) en langue originale. La première représentation scénique des Parades en version polonaise a eu lieu en novembre 1958 à Varsovie et, au printemps 1959, ellesé taient jouées avec un grand succès au Festival du Théâtre des Nations à Paris. Ce succès a assurè à l’oeuvre dramatique de Potocki, une carrière internationale.
