Michaux and Grzegorzewski : lessons in surrealism

Artykuł analizuje wpływ Henriego Michaux na twórczość teatralną Jerzego Grzegorzewskiego. Polski reżyser wystawił teksty Michaux tylko raz, na samym początku swojej drogi - jako egzamin na drugim roku studiów reżyserskich (1963). Fascynacja twórczością i biografią Michaux towarzyszyła mu jednak przez całe życie, a jej ślady można odnaleźć w wielu spektaklach Grzegorzewskiego. Celem artykułu jest obalenie kilku fałszywych tez krążących w kręgach krytyki teatralnej i teatrologii. Pierwsza z nich głosi, że surrealizm jako ruch awangardowy nie pozostawił po sobie żadnych znaczących tekstów, a teatr surrealistyczny tak naprawdę nigdy nie istniał. Inne tezy dotyczą tego, na ile teatr Grzegorzewskiego można nazwać surrealistycznym i jakie jest źródło jego surrealistycznych inspiracji (błędnie przypisuje się je wpływom Witkacego, podczas gdy wyobraźnia reżysera wydaje się mieć więcej wspólnego z wyobraźnią Michaux).

The article looks at how Henri Michaux influenced Jerzy Grzegorzewski's theatrical work. The Polish director staged Michaux's texts only once, at the very beginning of his path - as an exam in his second year of directing studies (1963). However, his fascination with Michaux's work and biography accompanied him all his life, and its traces can be found in many of Grzegorzewski's performances. The aim of the article is to refute several false theses circulating in theatre critique and theatre studies circles. The first thesis is that surrealism as an avant-garde movement left no significant texts and that surrealist theatre never really existed. Other theses concern the question of the extent to which Grzegorzewski's theatre can be called surrealist and what the source of his surrealist influences is (they are erroneously attributed to the influence of Witkacy, while the director's imagination seems to have more in common with that of Michaux).
