Things - emotions - identity in selected short stories from the collection "Childhood forty nine" by Lyudmila Ulitskaya

The article analyses three short stories by Lyudmila Ulitskaya [Wax Duckling (Восковая уточка), Granddad Whisperer (Дед-шептун) and Nails (Гвозди)] whose protagonists are children. Their earliest life experiences, emotions and relationships influencing the formation of identity, are at the centre of the writer’s attention. The aim of this paper is to draw attention to the role that objects play in the formation of characters’ identities. Ordinary objects take on an extraordinary quality in children’s eyes and evoke strong emotional reactions: curiosity or desire. These emotions play an important role in children’s lives, as they initiate the process of becoming aware of one’s own self. Intense emotions mark the beginning of the transition from childhood to adulthood. The context for the analysis is provided by Ulicka’s other texts, in which the author addresses the issue of man’s relationship with things.

Artykuł zawiera analizę trzech opowiadań Ludmiły Ulickiej [Woskowa kaczuszka (Восковая уточка), Gwoździe (Гвозди), Dziadek-szeptacz (Дед-шептун)], których bohaterami są dzieci. Ich najwcześniejsze doświadczenia życiowe, emocje i relacje z innymi ludźmi wpływające na kształtowanie się tożsamości znajdują się w centrum uwagi pisarki. Celem artykułu jest zwrócenie uwagi na rolę, jaką w formowaniu się tożsamości bohaterów odgrywają przedmioty. Przedmioty powszednie nabierają w oczach dzieci cech niezwykłych i wywołują silne reakcje emocjonalne: zaciekawienie lub pożądanie. Emocje te pełnią w życiu dzieci kluczową rolę, gdyż inicjują proces uświadamiania sobie własnego „ja”. Emocje o dużym natężeniu wyznaczają początek przechodzenia od dzieciństwa do dorosłości. Kontekst dla analizy stanowią inne teksty L. Ulickiej, w których autorka porusza temat relacji człowieka z rzeczami.
