Forgotten, hidden, discovered..., unknown : Maria Restituta Kafka (SFCC) (1894-1943)

The main theme of Antonio Sagardoy’s monograph, published in German in 2001, is the life, work and martyrdom of nun Maria Restituta Kafka (1894-1943), born at the end of the 19th century in the Austro-Hungarian city of Hucovice near Brno. The author chronologically presents the fate of the Blessed One, without giving up on presenting a religious interpretation of the decisions she made and showing her experiences accompanying her work, among others in the Mödling hospital near Vienna, as well as her isolation while waiting for the execution of the death sentence, when she was maturing to accept her fate in an atmosphere of abandonment, loneliness, fear, limitation and helplessness, while growing in faith and trust in God. The aim of the review article is to check and discuss the contribution of the monograph to the rich literature on the subject, showing the lives and works of non-Polish saints and blessed ones living in the recent past. Moreover, the aim of the following text is to try to assess whether the content contained in the reviewed book may constitute an issue worth developing and publishing in Polish in order to promote the achievements of the Austrian nun outside Austria.

Tematem przewodnim, opublikowanej w języku niemieckim w 2001 roku, monografii Antonia Sagardoy’a jest życie, dzieło i męczeńska śmierć s. Marii Restytuty Kafki (1894-1943), urodzonej pod koniec XIX wieku w austro-węgierskich Husovicach, nieopodal Brna. Autor publikacji prezentuje koleje losu Błogosławionej chronologicznie, nie rezygnując jednocześnie z przedstawienia religijnej interpretacji podjętych przez nią decyzji, oraz ukazania jej przeżyć, towarzyszących zarówno jej pracy, m.in. w podwiedeńskim szpitalu Mödling, jak i odosobnieniu podczas oczekiwania na wykonanie wyroku śmierci, kiedy dojrzewała do przyjęcia swego losu w atmosferze opuszczenia, samotności, lęku, ograniczenia i bezradności, przy jednoczesnym wzrastaniu w wierze i zaufaniu Bogu. Celem artykułu recenzyjnego jest sprawdzenie i omówienie wkładu monografii w bogatą literaturę przedmiotu, ukazującą żywoty i dzieła świętych i błogosławionych nie-polskich, żyjących w nieodległej przeszłości. Ponadto celem poniższego tekstu jest próba oceny, czy treść zawarta w recenzowanej książce może stanowić zagadnienie warte opracowania i opublikowania w języku polskim po to, by propagować dokonania austriackiej zakonnicy poza granicami Austrii.
