Chinese linguistic terminology in the textbook "Grammatica latina ad usum sinensium juvenum" by Joaquim Afonso Gonçalves (1828)

"Grammatica latina ad usum sinensium juvenum" (‘A Latin grammar for the use of the Chinese youth’), written by Joaquim Afonso Gonçalves in 1828, is thought to be the oldest surviving Latin textbook published in the Middle Kingdom. This pioneering work contains a large number of novel Chinese-language terms denoting various linguistic concepts which had not been exhaustively described by earlier Sinophone scholars. The aim of this article is to analyse the characteristic nomenclature featured in Gonçalves’s textbook and compare it with the Latin and Chinese terminology used by contemporaneous and later authors.
