The main aim of the article was to discuss Latin as a school subject in a three-year general secondary school. The three-year general secondary school was an element of the model of general education introduced on the basis of the reform of the education system of 1999 and operated in the years 2002–2022. The starting point was an analysis of the educational legislation regulating the functioning of Polish education in the years 2002–2022. On this basis, the difficult organisational situation of Latin language and the main problems resulting from the marginalisation of this subject were presented. Then the core curri-culum of the Latin language and culture subject was analysed. The last part of the article is a discussion of successive formulas for the secondary school-leaving examination, which were adapted to the changing organisational and curricular conditions in which the Latin language and culture of antiquity subject was realised.
