The Duet on the pedagogy of quality of life : if we can and if yes – how to educate towards well-being/happiness
The article reflects on the assumptions of positive psychology which form the basis for constructing a model of quality of life that can be utilized in the educational process. An attempt is made to justify the emergence of a new sub-discipline of pedagogy with a specific goal and subject matter which is education for quality of life (sense of happiness). Two main traditions in the understanding of well-being are generally characterized – the eudaimonic and the hedonic traditions, as well as a developing tradition that combines both approaches, the so-called "third way," conventionally named eudaimonic hedonism. The article points out and justifies the necessity of expanding the area of research on quality of life in pedagogy to include its foundations/sources (human needs) which can constitute an element of the quality of life model that guides the construction of educational system assumptions and programs supporting personal development.
