Half a century of might : Japanese attempts to build a colonial empire

Artykuł przedstawia proces budowania mocarstwowego statusu przez Japonię od drugiej połowy XIX wieku, aż do klęski tego państwa w wojnie na Pacyfiku. Autorka omawia najważniejsze zagadnienia związane z powstawaniem japońskiego imperium w Azji, zaczynając od „otwarcia” Japonii przez Amerykanów w połowie wieku XIX i wynikłej z tego faktu zmiany władz w tym kraju, co doprowadziło do przekształcenia się zacofanego technologicznie feudalnego państwa w nowoczesną gospodarczą i militarną potęgę Azji Wschodniej. Następnie omówiona jest stopniowa ekspansja terytorialna Japonii, od zajmowania ziem "niczyich" lub od dłuższego czasu związanych z tym państwem, aż po zdobycze na kontynencie azjatyckim i odległych wodach Pacyfiku, przyłączone w wyniku zwycięskich konfliktów zbrojnych z sąsiadami lub aneksji. Później autorka przechodzi do omówienia genezy i wpływów armii oraz marynarki wojennej na rząd Japonii w pierwszej połowie XX wieku, kończąc na przedstawieniu ideologii, nasyconej mitologią, stojącej za agresywną polityką cesarstwa.

The article presents the process of building a superpower status by Japan from the second half of the 19th century until the Japanese defeat in the war on the Pacific. The author depicts the most important issues concerning the creation of the Japanese Empire in Asia, including the "opening" of Japan by the Americans in the middle of the 19th century and the consequent changes in the Japanese government, which led to the transformation of the technologically backward feudal state into the modern economic and military power of Eastern Asia. Subsequently, the article discusses the gradual territorial expansion of Japan: from occupying either “no man’s” lands or those associated with this country for a longer time to the conquests on the Asian continent and the distant waters of the Pacific acquired through the victorious armed conflicts with the neighbors or through annexations. Afterwards, the author discusses the origins of army and navy and their influence on the Japanese government in the first half of the 20th century. The article ends with the presentation of the mythology-infused ideology standing behind the aggressive polity of the empire.
