Epistemological values of melancholy : Cioran and Pessoa
The fragmentary writing often pushed to the perfection and concision of aphorisms, the way of approaching the existential problem, dominated by the reflection full of melancholy and pessimistic conclusions regarding the meanings and the evolutions of the human universe, seem to approach Cioran and Pessoa ( both of them being considered "exegetes of unhappiness"). Under the sign of similarity, broadly, it is also the predisposition of the two to a silent, solitary existence and, talking about Pessoa, lonely and at the limit of anonymity. It was also pointed out several times that both, Cioran and Pessoa, although attracted by philosophical reflection, never adhered to a particular theory, nor did they have the ambition to formulate one's own. Poets like G. Benn or A. Zagajewski consider melancholy to be "a good measure of things," but in the late postmodernity subordinated to technological innovatios, this, transformed into a simple disease called depression, it is considered pathology. Under such circumstances, the reading of some authors like Cioran or Pessoa risks to get stuck today only at the level of a melancholy perceived as a style, worthless to search for some truth about ourselves. In this text, we ask ourselves whether this quasi-rejection for the theories of any kind, present in Pessoa and Cioran’s work, it is a sufficient argument to consider both of them, first of all, authors of the "beautiful journals" and to doubt the validity of their observations about the human universe.
