"De rhetorica christiana" św. Augustyna : między filologią a filozofią
The main purpose of this paper is the presentation of the principal foundation creating the
Christian rhetoric (rhetorica chrisitana) by the interpretation of some selected problems from
the St. Augustine’s treatise entitled De doctrina Christiana (427). The discourse of the bishop of Hippo was treated through the centuries as the datum-point for authors of medieval artes
praedicandi and later theoreticians of the ecdesial eloquence (e. g. Johannes Reuchlin, Desiderius
Erasmus, Agostino Valier, Louis of Grenada and Bartholomew Keckermann). The
analyses are focused on the influence of the Ciceronian theory of rhetoric upon Augustine in
the development of his Christian rhetoric. Augustine’s concept of ecdesial persuasiveness is also
presented as the consequence of philosophical and theological presumptions, prescribing the
most important ways of his (re)interpretation of the rhetorical tradition, especially the Latin
authors (Cicero and Quintilian).
