Granice wstydu : przypadki z opowiadań Rohintona Mistry

Wstyd można zidentyfikować i zdefiniować na wiele różnych sposobów, ale w niniejszym tekście zastosowano funkcjonalną definicję wstydu autorstwa psychologa kultury Richarda A. Shwedera. Shweder twierdzi, że wstyd jest wszędzie taki sam, natomias modyfikacjom i różnicowaniu ulega jego istota, natura, sposoby wyrażania w różnych tradycjach kulturowych, momentach historycznych i miejscach. Tekst zatytułowany "Granice wstydu: przypadki z opowiadań Rohintona Mistry'ego" omawia literackie reprezentacje wstydu znajdujące się w kolekcji: "Opowieści z Firozsha Baag" autorstwa Mistry. "Oryginalne" poczucie wstydu, którego doświadczają bohaterowie opowiadań, ulego rozmyciu, przesunięciu, wzmocnieniu lub pomniejszeniu w różnych środowiskach kulturowych. Wybrane opowiadania są analizowane w odniesieniu do sposobów doświadczania wstydu przez bohaterów, które wyraźnie stają się zależne od różnych uwarunkowań kulturowych, które z kolei wpływają na wymiary afektywnej ekspresji wstydu. Shame can be identified and defined in many different ways but in the present text, a functional definition of shame by a cultural psychologist Richard A. Shweder is applied. Shweder argues that shame is the same everywhere. What, however, does undergo modifications and differentiation is its essence, nature, ways of expressing, which differ in different cultural traditions, historical moments and places. The text titled "Limits of shame: cases from Rohinton Mistry's short stories" discusses literary representations of shame found in the collection: "Tales from Firozsha Baag" by Mistry. The "original" sense of shame experienced by the protagonists of the stories becomes at times blurred, shifted, strengthened or diminished in different cultural environments. Chosen short stories are analysed with regard to ways of experiencing shame by the protagonists, which clearly becomes dependant on different cultural determinants, which, in turn, influence the dimensions of shame's affective expression.
