The work focuses on four issues: conversational implicature, conventional implicature, generalised vs. particularised implicature and scalar implicature. A number of examples are taken from the 1947 drama of Tennesee Williams titled The Streetcar Named Desire to show workings of the Cooperative Principle – its observance and non-observance, the importance of context and the ways of interpreting the utterances. The thesis consists of two chapters. Chapter 1 deals with the theoretical explanation of the phenomena mentioned above. Chapter 2 contains a number of examples from the play analysed in accordance with the issues explained in chapter 1. - Pokaż więcej
