The present research investigated the errors committed by lower-secondary school learners. The errors were obtained from achievement tests written by learners throughout the 2014/2015 school year. Students were dived into two groups based on their level of proficiency. The elementary group which scored worse results in a placement test and the upper elementary group whose results were better. The main aim of the study was to determine the type of errors which was most frequently made by students as well as identify the sources of errors.The data analysis gave evidence that the most numerous linguistic type of errors was the category of grammatical errors.As far as the categories of addition, omission, misselection and misordering are concerned, the most frequently occurring were the errors of misselection, then were the errors of addition, omission and misordering. As regards sources of errors, they were predominantly caused by intralingual transfer – constituting 85%.
